Glass-top hob care: stains, scratches and cracks

· HouseTech Care

The everyday clean, white rings and burnt-on stains, what never to use on toughened glass, and when a chip or a crack means the hob must not be used.

A glass-top hob looks beautiful for the first month. Then the white rings from boiled-over milk appear, a brown patch near the big burner will not come off, and somebody scrubs it with the steel scrubber “just once”. Toughened glass is strong, but it has a few clear rules. This article covers the daily clean, the stubborn stains, the scratches that cannot be undone, and the cracks that mean the hob must not be used.

The rule that prevents most damage: let it cool

Toughened glass handles heat well, but it does not like sudden changes. Cold water poured on a hot glass top, or a wet cloth slapped onto the area around a burner that has just been used, can crack it. Wipe spills once the glass is warm, not hot. For a boil-over while cooking, switch the burner off and let it cool for a few minutes before you clean up.

The everyday clean

  1. Make sure every knob is off and the burners are cool.
  2. Lift off the pan supports and the burner caps and keep them aside.
  3. Wipe the glass with a soft cloth or sponge dampened with water and a drop of mild dishwashing liquid.
  4. Wipe again with a cloth dampened in plain water to remove the soap film.
  5. Dry with a clean, dry cloth. Drying is what stops the white water marks.

Keep the cloth damp, not dripping. Water running down around the knob spindles and into the burner area can stop the ignition from sparking until it dries, and is a common reason for “hob not clicking” calls the morning after a deep clean.

Stubborn stains

  • White rings and haze. These are usually minerals from hard water or dried milk. A cloth dampened with diluted white vinegar, followed by a plain water wipe and a dry cloth, removes most of them.
  • Brown, burnt-on patches. Spilt food or oil that was heated again. Make a paste of baking soda and a little water, spread it over the cool patch, leave it for fifteen minutes, then wipe with a soft sponge. Repeat rather than scrub harder.
  • Sticky oil film. A warm cloth with dishwashing liquid, then plain water, then dry.

A plastic scraper made for glass hobs can lift a hard deposit if held flat. Never use a knife or a blade at an angle.

What never to use

  • Steel wool, steel scrubbers or the green abrasive side of a kitchen sponge.
  • Scouring powder or any gritty cleaner.
  • Strong oven cleaners or acid toilet cleaners, which can damage printing on the glass and the seals at the edge.
  • Spray cleaners sprayed directly at the hob. Spray onto the cloth instead, so liquid does not run under the knobs.

Scratches from abrasive cleaners are permanent. They do not weaken the glass in a dangerous way on their own, but they hold dirt and make the top look old quickly.

Habits that keep the glass safe

  • Lift heavy vessels; do not slide them across the glass, especially a cast-iron tawa or a pressure cooker with grit on its base.
  • Do not use the hob as extra counter space. A heavy pot or a steel lid dropped on the glass can chip its edge.
  • Do not stand on the counter near the hob to reach a top cabinet.
  • Keep the vessel centred on its burner. A large kadhai that hangs over the edge heats the glass beside the burner much more than it should.
  • Wipe spilt sugar or syrup quickly once it cools. Sugar that hardens on hot glass is the hardest stain to remove.

Chips and cracks: when to stop using the hob

A small chip at the very edge of the glass is a reason to get the hob looked at soon. A crack anywhere on the glass is a reason to stop using it now.

If the glass top has a crack, switch every burner off, close the regulator or the PNG valve, and do not cook on it until it has been checked. Glass that is already cracked can break further with heat, and the burners and gas parts sit directly under it.

Whether the glass can be replaced on its own depends on the model and whether the part is available. Our articles on what decides a glass replacement and on repair or replace explain the choices.

The parts around the glass

Cleaning the glass is only part of the job. Burner caps and heads collect spilt food in their ports, which gives an uneven or yellow flame. The flame-failure probe beside each burner should be wiped with a dry cloth, never bent or scrubbed. Knobs pull straight off for cleaning on most hobs; wash them in soapy water, dry them fully and push them back. Our guide to hob and gas stove care covers which of these to do at home and which to leave to the six-monthly service.

Questions people ask

Glass hob pe safed daag kaise hatayein?

White marks are usually hard-water minerals or dried milk. Wipe the cool glass with a cloth dampened in diluted white vinegar, then with plain water, and dry it well. Drying after every clean stops them coming back.

Can scratches on a glass hob be polished out?

No. Toughened glass cannot be polished like a mobile screen. Fine scratches are cosmetic; deep ones collect dirt. Prevent them by never using abrasive pads.

Hob saaf karne ke baad click nahi kar raha, kyun?

Water probably got under the knobs or onto the ignition parts. Leave the hob off and dry, ideally overnight. If it still does not click, read our guide on a hob not igniting.

If your glass top is chipped, a burner is not working right, or you want a full clean and check, book a hob service. A visiting charge applies, and you are told the cost of any part before it is fitted.
