Hob glass replacement: what decides the cost
Brand, size, burner cutouts and whether the frame survived. Why two cracked hobs can be very different quotes, and when the answer is a new hob.
Toughened glass on a hob is strong until it is not. When it goes, the question is whether a new panel is worth fitting, and the answer depends on four things.
Brand and availability
Mainstream brands stock glass tops for current and recent models. Older or imported hobs may not have a panel available at all, or only at a price that makes no sense against a new unit.
Size and number of burners
A four-burner panel is larger, has more cutouts, and costs more than a two-burner one. The glass is cut and toughened to the burner layout, so it is model-specific, not generic.
What else broke
Often the impact that cracked the glass also bent a burner base or damaged an electrode. Those add to the job. If the frame under the glass has twisted, a new panel will crack again.
Labour
The hob comes out of the counter, is stripped to the frame, reassembled onto the new glass, refitted, sealed and leak-tested. That is a longer visit than most hob repairs.
Do not use a hob with cracked glass, even one burner away from the crack. Toughened glass fails all at once, not gradually.
Repair or replace
As a rough rule: if the panel plus fitting is more than about half the price of an equivalent new hob, replace the hob. A technician will give you both numbers and let you decide.
