Hard water in the tricity: what it costs you across the house

Groundwater across Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur runs hard. Most people first meet the problem as white deposits on taps and a film on glassware. What is less obvious is that the same water is quietly working on three or four appliances at once.

What hard water actually is

Dissolved calcium and magnesium salts. Harmless to drink at normal levels, but they come out of solution when water is heated or forced through a membrane, and they settle on whatever surface is nearest. That surface is usually the part of the appliance doing the work.

Where it shows up first

• Geyser — scale insulates the heating element, so it runs longer for the same temperature. This is the most expensive one, because you pay for it monthly on the electricity bill
• RO purifier — the membrane clogs faster, output slows, and you replace a costly part earlier than the manual suggests
• Washing machine — deposits on the heater and drum, and detergent that lathers poorly so you use more of it
• Taps, showers and the kitchen mixer — visible, annoying, and the easiest to descale yourself

What is worth doing

Descale the geyser annually rather than waiting for it to slow down. Have the RO's TDS measured at each service so the membrane is changed when it is actually due, not on a guess. For the rest, a monthly wipe with dilute citric acid on taps and shower heads keeps deposits from setting hard.

A whole-house softener solves it properly, but it is a real investment and needs its own maintenance. For most homes here, servicing the two appliances that matter — geyser and RO — costs far less and captures most of the benefit.

The one number worth knowing

Ask for your TDS reading at the tap. Between roughly 50 and 150 ppm at the purifier outlet is a comfortable range. If your input reading is high, that tells you your membrane and your geyser element are both working harder than the average, and your service intervals should be shorter than the manual says.
