Gas geyser or electric: the safety and running-cost comparison

Gas geysers are popular for good reasons — they are cheap to run and never run out of hot water. They also have one hard requirement that, when ignored, is dangerous in a way electric geysers are not.

Running cost

Gas heats water for less per litre than electricity in most homes, especially on PNG. For a household that uses a lot of hot water, the difference over a winter is real.

Convenience

Gas heats on demand with no tank to wait for and no limit on how long the shower runs. Electric storage needs time to heat and can run out; electric instant is limited by the circuit.

The non-negotiable rule for gas

A gas geyser burns fuel and produces exhaust, including carbon monoxide. It must be installed with the flue vented outside, in a room with permanent ventilation, and never in a small closed bathroom. Every winter there are deaths in India from gas geysers in sealed bathrooms. This is not a maintenance issue; it is an installation and usage issue, and it does not have a second chance.

Electric

No combustion, no exhaust, no ventilation requirement. The risks are electrical — a proper earth and an earth-leakage breaker cover them. Simpler to install and simpler to live with in a flat.

If you have a gas geyser in a bathroom without a window or an exhaust that runs whenever the geyser does, do not use it until that is changed. Move it outside the bathroom or replace it with electric. There is no safe way to use it as it is.
