UV, UF or RO: which does tricity water actually need
They are not interchangeable. What each removes, what each cannot, and why most homes here need RO with one of the others behind it.
The three letters on the box describe three different jobs. Buying the wrong one means paying for a purifier that does not address what is actually in your water.
RO — reverse osmosis
Removes dissolved solids: salts, hardness minerals, heavy metals. It is the only one of the three that lowers TDS. It also removes most microorganisms as a side effect. It wastes water and needs pressure.
UV — ultraviolet
Kills bacteria and viruses with light. Removes nothing — the water is disinfected but has the same TDS, the same hardness, the same taste. Useful as a safety stage; useless alone on hard water.
UF — ultrafiltration
A fine hollow-fibre filter that physically blocks bacteria, cysts and suspended particles. No electricity, no waste. Does not remove dissolved solids either.
What tricity water calls for
Groundwater here is hard and high in dissolved solids. UV or UF alone leave that untouched — the water is safe but still hard, still scaling the kettle, still tasting mineral. RO is what addresses it. Behind the RO, UV or UF as a final barrier is worthwhile, especially if the tank sits.
When RO is not needed
- A treated municipal supply with low TDS: UV or UF alone may be enough
- A rented flat with a short stay and low TDS: UF is cheap and simple
- TDS under about 200 at the tap: RO is arguably overkill
Measure before buying. A pocket TDS meter and a look at the reading tells you in ten seconds whether RO is doing something for you or just wasting water. Above 300, RO. Below 150, probably not.
