Should you clean chimney filters yourself? What is safe to do at home

Yes — some of it, and doing that part regularly is the best thing you can do for the chimney between services. The rest is not about skill; it is about what is behind the panel.

Safe to do yourself

• Remove and wash the baffle or mesh filters — hot water, degreaser, soft brush, dry fully
• Empty and wash the oil collector cup
• Wipe the underside and the control panel with a damp cloth
• Check the outlet flap outside moves freely, if you can see it safely from a window or balcony

Leave to a technician

• Anything that needs the fan housing opened
• The impeller and motor
• The capacitor — it holds a charge after the power is off
• The duct beyond the first section
• Any electrical fault, including a light or speed that has stopped working

Switch the chimney off at the wall socket before removing filters, not just at the panel. Some units spin up if a filter is knocked while they are on standby.

Why the line is where it is

Behind the filters there is a fan with sharp blades, a charged capacitor, live connections and a lot of grease. None of that is difficult for someone with the right tools and the housing open on a bench. All of it is a bad idea standing on a stool at head height.

The rhythm that works

Filters and cup every two weeks. A full service every six months. Do the first part yourself and the second part costs less, because there is less to clean.
