Gas regulator: how to tell it is failing and when to replace it

The regulator is the small unit clamped onto the cylinder. It drops cylinder pressure to what the stove needs. When it starts to go, the symptoms show up at every burner at once — that is the tell.

Signs of a failing regulator

• All burners weak, even with a full cylinder
• A faint hiss at the cylinder top when the stove is off
• A gas smell near the cylinder that is not there near the stove
• The regulator knob feels loose or does not click positively
• Flame surges or drops when another burner is turned on

Why not repair it

A domestic regulator is a sealed safety device. Its diaphragm and seals wear, and there is no serviceable part inside that should be opened by anyone but the manufacturer. The correct fix is replacement, with a regulator that carries the ISI mark and matches your cylinder type.

How long they last

Around five years in normal use. The date is usually stamped on the body. Past that, replace it even if it seems fine — the diaphragm hardens with age and the failure mode is a leak, not a gradual weakening.

Never buy a regulator from an unknown source or use one without the ISI mark. A regulator is the one part where the cheapest option can be the most expensive decision.

Fitting

Cylinder off, old regulator removed, new one seated and locked, then a soapy-water test at the joint before the stove is lit. It takes a few minutes and is included in a stove service visit.
