Geyser slow to heat? It is almost always scale

If your geyser used to be ready in fifteen minutes and now takes half an hour, nothing has broken. A layer of calcium and magnesium salts has settled on the heating element, and it is insulating exactly the surface that is supposed to transfer heat into the water.

Why tricity water does this faster

Groundwater across Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur runs hard. Every heating cycle leaves a little more scale behind, and scale is a poor conductor. The element has to run longer to reach the same thermostat cut-off, so you pay for the same hot water twice over.

What it costs you

A scaled element on a 15-litre geyser used twice a day can add meaningfully to a winter bill, because the run time per cycle grows steadily while nothing looks wrong. The cost creeps rather than jumps, which is why most people never connect the two.

Signs it is scale and not something else

• Heating is slow but the water does eventually get hot
• A knocking or crackling sound while heating — steam escaping under the scale layer
• Slightly cloudy first draw, or fine white sediment in the bucket
• The problem got worse gradually, over months, not overnight

Water that never gets hot at all is a different fault: a failed element, a tripped thermal cut-out, or a dead thermostat. That is a repair, not a service.

How often to descale

Once a year is the general rule, ideally just before winter when the geyser starts working hard. In areas where the water is particularly hard, every eight to ten months is a better interval.

While the geyser is open, check these too

• The magnesium anode rod, which corrodes on purpose so the tank does not
• The pressure-release valve, which should be free and not crusted shut
• Earthing at the socket, which matters more on a water heater than on anything else in the house

A geyser is the one appliance in the house that combines water, 230 volts and pressure. It is worth having the safety items checked on the same visit rather than a separate one.
