Orange flame on your gas stove: causes and fixes

A properly burning LPG or PNG flame is blue with a small, sharp inner cone. If yours is orange, yellow or lazy, the burner is not getting the air-to-gas mix it needs, and you are paying for gas that is not turning into heat.

What orange actually tells you

Colour is a combustion readout. Blue means the gas is burning completely. Orange means unburnt carbon particles are glowing — incomplete combustion. That wastes gas, blackens the base of your utensils, and produces more carbon monoxide than a correctly tuned burner.

The usual causes, in the order we find them

• Clogged burner jets — spilled food and oil block the tiny gas ports
• Air-mix shutter out of adjustment, so the burner is starved of air
• Burner cap seated slightly off, which is easy to do after cleaning
• A humidifier, cooler or open window blowing across the flame
• In older setups, a hose or regulator past its life

One harmless cause: salt. If something boils over and salt lands on the burner, you will get orange flecks for a few minutes. That clears on its own.

What you can do yourself

Let everything cool, lift off the burner cap and ring, and clear each gas port with a pin — not a toothpick, which snaps and leaves a blockage. Wash the parts, dry them completely, and seat the cap so it sits flat. A surprising number of orange-flame calls are solved at exactly this step.

When to call

If the flame is still orange after a proper cleaning, the air shutter needs adjusting, and that is a job with a tool and a known target rather than trial and error. Any smell of gas, a hose that feels hard or sticky, or a flame that lifts off the burner should be looked at the same day.

The safety check nobody does

A rubber LPG hose should be replaced every two years regardless of how it looks. The date is stamped on the hose. Every service visit is a good moment to check it, along with a soap test on the regulator and burner joints.
